Nothing happens at a date, so stop watching for one
Pages move through five steps, and you can tell which step you are stuck on this week. Impressions on queries you never targeted are the earliest honest evidence that something is working.
Someone searching how long until SEO works is usually three months into paying for it and starting to wonder. The honest answer has two parts, and the first part is that the question is wrong: nothing happens at a date. Things happen in a sequence, and you can tell whether you are in the sequence long before you can tell whether you have won.
The sequence, and what each step proves
| Step | What you see | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Crawled | The page appears in your server logs and in the crawl report. | It is reachable. Nothing more. |
| Indexed | The page is reported as indexed rather than discovered or excluded. | It is eligible to rank. Still no traffic. |
| Impressions | A handful of impressions on long queries nobody targeted. | The page is being tested against real queries. |
| Position drift | Average position moves from the forties towards the teens. | The strongest early signal that it will eventually land. |
| Clicks | Clicks, then enquiries attributable to the page. | The only step that pays. |
What actually moves the timeline
Three things decide whether you are looking at weeks or a year. How competitive the query is, meaning who currently owns it: a page competing with a national publisher is a different project from one competing with three local firms. How established the domain is, because a site with history gets crawled and trusted faster than one registered last month. And how specific the page is, because a narrow answerable question can land in weeks while a head term may never land at all.
The three-month conversation
If you are three months in with no impressions on anything, that is not patience, that is a problem, and it is usually indexation rather than quality. If you have impressions and no clicks, the pages are being tested and losing, which is a titles and intent problem you can fix this week. If you have clicks and no enquiries, SEO is working and the website is not. Those are three different invoices, and anybody who answers all three with more content is guessing.
The first of those three has its own diagnosis, which is in not indexed or not ranking, and why the difference decides what to fix.
