Everything that scales about review collection is the part that gets you penalised

Ask in person, at the moment the problem is solved, and name what the customer might mention. Everything else, incentives, filtering, buying, costs more than it returns.

Reviews are the part of local search that businesses most want to automate and least should. The things that work are slow, specific and human, and the things that scale are the things that get listings penalised.

Ask at the moment of relief

The highest-converting moment to ask is immediately after the problem is solved and before the invoice is paid, in person, by the person who solved it. Not a drip campaign three days later. The request that works names what the customer might mention, because the blocking problem is not willingness, it is that the customer does not know what to write.

What not to do

  • Do not offer anything in exchange, including a discount, a draw entry or a donation. Incentivised reviews violate the platform terms and get removed in batches.
  • Do not filter, meaning do not ask happy customers for a public review and unhappy ones for private feedback. Review gating is prohibited and detectable.
  • Do not buy them. The pattern is obvious in the timing and the language, and the recovery costs more than the reviews did.
  • Do not collect them only on your own website. Testimonials you host are worth something for conversion and nothing for the map pack.

Replies are read by the next customer

A reply is not for the reviewer, who has moved on. It is for the next person comparing three businesses, and it is the only place where you get to answer a criticism in your own words. That makes a defensive reply expensive and a specific, unbothered one valuable. The negative review answered calmly and factually sells better than the fifth five-star review does.
