The agency that says yes to every rebuild is not the one to buy from

Four signs the website is not what is broken, what the same budget buys instead, and the structural reasons that do justify starting again.

We turn down rebuilds. Not often, but often enough that it is worth writing down why, because a business that pays for a new website when it needed something else has spent its budget on the one thing that will not fix the problem.

Four signs the website is not the problem

  • You have traffic and no enquiries, and the enquiries you do get are the wrong size. That is a positioning and pricing problem wearing a website costume.
  • The site converts fine and nobody finds it. That is a content and local-search problem, and a redesign of eight pages nobody visits changes nothing.
  • Enquiries arrive and nobody answers them within a day. No website survives a three-day reply, and no rebuild fixes a staffing decision.
  • The last rebuild was two years ago and the one before that was two years before. Four designs in six years is a decision-making problem, and the fifth will not land either.

What usually costs less and does more

In most of these cases the same budget buys more as a set of smaller interventions: fixing the three pages that already get traffic, writing the four pages that answer what people actually search for, getting the business profile and local pages right, and making the enquiry path shorter. That work is less satisfying to buy than a new design, because nobody gets to show their partner a screenshot, and it moves the number the business actually cares about.

When a rebuild is the right answer

There are real cases. A site nobody can edit without a developer, which means the content programme will never happen. A platform that cannot do what the business now sells. A site that fails on a phone, where most of the traffic is. Templates and plugins nobody has updated in three years, which is a security question rather than a design one. Those are structural, and no amount of content fixes them. The point is not that rebuilds are wrong. It is that the reason has to be one of these rather than a feeling that the site looks dated.
